Before I built Naelos, I watched people try to time their lives with memory, guesswork and mental maths. It never worked. Astrological timing is geometry, and if a position is off by a fraction of a degree, the timing is wrong. At Naelos, we calculate everything using the NASA JPL DE440/DE441 ephemeris and the tropical zodiac so you never have to guess. Predictive astrology isn't fortune-telling. It's the study of how the moving sky lines up with your own birth chart over time. Here's how each part works.

## What are transits in astrology?
Transits are the exact angles the moving planets (the Sun out to Pluto) make to the planets, Ascendant and Midheaven in your birth chart. Think of them as the weather you live through, day to day.

When a slow-moving planet like Saturn or Uranus makes an exact geometric angle to your natal chart, you feel it. Transits are what people usually mean when they say "Saturn is hitting my chart." To find out which transits are active in your life right now, Naelos calculates them to the minute in UTC.

The Saturn return is the best-known example. If you were born in 1997, your Saturn sits in a narrow band. In 1997, Saturn was at 1°21′ Aries on Jan 1, stationed retrograde at 20°21′ Aries on 1997-08-01, stationed direct at 13°32′ Aries on 1997-12-16, and sat at 13°44′ Aries on Dec 31. That means everyone born in 1997 has natal Saturn between 1°21′ and 20°21′ Aries.

Now look at how the transiting Saturn meets that natal placement. Transiting Saturn entered Aries on 2025-05-25, stationed retrograde at 1°56′ Aries on 2025-07-13, re-entered Pisces on 2025-09-01, stationed direct at 25°09′ Pisces on 2025-11-28, re-entered Aries on 2026-02-14, stationed retrograde at 14°44′ Aries on 2026-07-26, and moved to 9°11′ Aries. If your natal Saturn is early in that 1997 range, you feel these shifts early.

## What are progressions in astrology?
Progressions track how you change over time, not where the sky is today. They show how your needs and focus shift as you get older.

We primarily use secondary progressions, where one day after birth equals one full year of life. We also use solar arc directions, where every point in your chart is moved forward by the exact arc the Sun traveled in your progressed chart. If you want to track how your emotional needs shift through the signs, keep an eye on your progressed Moon over a roughly 28-year cycle.

## What are returns in astrology?
Returns are charts cast for the exact moment a planet returns to the exact degree and minute it occupied when you were born. Each one sets the tone for the stretch of time that follows.

The two most common returns are the solar return and the lunar return. A solar return is the moment the Sun returns to its exact birth position each year, creating a new chart that outlines the themes for your birthday year. A lunar return happens every month when the Moon returns to its birth position, showing the emotional tone of the coming weeks. Naelos works them out to the minute.

## What are eclipses in astrology?
Eclipses are New and Full Moons that fall close to the lunar nodes. Astrologers read them as turning points: where something ends, starts or changes fast.

When a solar or lunar eclipse hits a specific degree in your birth chart, it activates the houses involved. Naelos calculates the exact moment, degree, and type of every eclipse so you can see which part of your chart it lands in.

## How do predictive astrology techniques compare?

| Technique | What moves | What it shows | Timeframe |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Transits | The planets as they move now | Outside events and day-to-day pressure | Days to years |
| Progressions | Your birth chart, a day for a year | How you change inside | Years to decades |
| Returns | The Sun or Moon back at its birth position | The theme of the year or month | A month or a year |
| Eclipses | New and Full Moons near the nodes | Turning points | Weeks to months |

You don't need guesswork, or horoscopes written for millions of people at once. Put transits, progressions, returns and eclipses together and you get a timeline built on real positions. You can run your own at [naelos.ai](https://naelos.ai).

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the difference between a transit and a progression?** Transits track real-time planets moving through the sky and making aspects to your birth chart. Progressions use a day-for-a-year formula to show your inner psychological growth and personal evolution over time.

**What is a solar return chart?** A solar return chart is cast for the exact moment the Sun returns to the precise degree and minute it occupied when you were born, and it sets the theme for your year ahead.

**How accurate are predictive astrology calculations on Naelos?** Naelos calculates all predictive astrology charts using the NASA JPL DE440/DE441 ephemeris and the tropical zodiac, with event times to the minute in UTC.

**What is a Saturn return?** A Saturn return occurs when transiting Saturn returns to the exact position it occupied in your natal chart, typically happening around ages 27 to 30 and often read as a time of growing up.

**What do eclipses show in predictive astrology?** Eclipses mark turning points. When one lands on a degree in your birth chart, astrologers read it as a time of endings, new starts or fast change in that part of life.
